July 2017 IELTS Speaking questions and responses (Major theme: Item or Object, Piece of Clothing)

LATEST PART 2  – ITEM / OBJECT

One of the major themes in Part 2 is to describe an object / item. Here are some of object /item topics  that correspond to this theme:

  • Describe your favorite piece of clothing
  • Describe a time that you had a free gift
  • Describe a gift that you recently gave to others

Cue Card:

Describe your favorite piece of clothing

You should say:

What it is

How often do you wear it

What it looks like

And explain why it is your favorite clothing

Answer:

To be honest, I’m not much of a clothes horse and not very interested in fashion so at first, I thought this topic might be quite hard. However, I’ve thought of one. I’ll tell you what it is, when and why I bought it and why I like it so much. The item is in itself unremarkable, it is a coat which is dark blue in color, and it’s made out of a lightweight, waterproof material, which makes it perfect for wearing at this time of year here in the Australia. I can still vividly remember that I bought the coat last year at the beginning of autumn when the weather started to get colder. It was easy to buy because I had had the exact same coat before, my old coat was starting to look a bit worn out, so I decided to buy a new version. As I knew which size I needed, I simply went online and found the best offer in a shopping website, and it was delivered to my house a few days later. As a matter of fact, I’m wearing this coat a lot at the moment, it’s my everyday coat for going to work  or for any other reason. The reason why I like this coat is that it’s so practical and functional. In addition to that it’s waterproof and it keeps me warm, but it also comes in handy for carrying things like my phone, wallet, loose change, a pen, and even a notebook; I tend to fill my pockets with whatever I can. In a nutshell, this coat is very useful and my favorite clothing so far.

Answer Overview:

The coat topic is suitable for the Object / Item theme. You can use the details provided above to describe your cue card, however, you must fit-in the right key points according to what’s given to you. For instance, you are given a topic to “Describe a gift that you recently gave to others”, you can replace some information above to suit your subject. Same goes with the other cue cards. You can pretend that the coat is something you bought as a present to a friend or a family member  (anyhow, the examiner don’t care about the truth, they care about your language).

Linking phrases/words used:

  • To be honest, However, I’ll tell you what it is, I can still vividly remember that, As a matter of fact, In addition tot hat, In a nutshell

  1. Do people in your country like to go shopping?

Answer: Absolutely, there is no doubt that people in China like shopping a lot especially young ladies. They go shopping almost every day, as a matter of fact, this has become their addiction because ones they see something attractive they will buy it in an instant or some just go for window shopping. Take me as an example, I often buy something at the shopping mall whenever I see something that attracts me. On the other hand, shopping is a stress reliever for most people. Let’s say for instance my aunt, whenever she is stress  or gloomy she will buy a new pair of shoes. She is a shoe addict and a new pair of shoes can enlighten her day.

Answer: I would say that the reasons for these are very distinct. I would like to start with people who like purchasing clothes, they buy different piece of clothing because of the reason that it is their nature, usually these are young ladies. Young ladies now a days are curious about the latest fashion trend so they want to always fit in. My friends are a good example, whenever we go to the shopping mall they can’t help but to buy clothes they find attractive. By contrast, there are people who seldom buy clothes, usually these are guys who don’t care about the fashion world and would  prefer playing computer games or drinking with their buddies. Just like my cousin, he spends most of his time playing DOTA at home he only have new clothes when someone give him a gift.

Answer: Fashion is very essential for millennials as it represents their lifestyle and well-being. As you know,  in China young people normally wear skirts or shorts and tank tops, they usually show much of their skin because to them they find it cute and sexy. I have a thought that, this fashion trend they have is like a revenge of their strict custom as they are known to be conservative especially in ancient times. On the contrary, adults dress according to their age, they wear casual dress or shirt and jeans with a sense of style. Most likely, you can see them wearing branded bags or shoes to showcase their sense of fashion. You know, I have seen famous Chinese stars who have a great sense of style on TV, the look fancy!

Answer: Impulsive buying is very common for Chinese. Can you believe that people in my country usually buy clothes almost every week or once in two weeks. This is due to the fact that in China you can buy affordable clothes in the shopping mall or online. Once they get attracted to a certain piece of clothing they will just purchase it in an instance. Another reason for this is because clothes have become a basic necessity especially for women. Especially that we’re influenced with fashion industry, more and more women are too curious about how they look, being fashionable is just part of their well-being

Answer Overview:

  • Introduction/Long response
  • First Point, Linking Phrase (Can you believe that), Reason

This situation happened to me last week, I and my friend was suppose to meet at 3pm but she arrived an hour later. To my frustration, I had her pay the movie ticket and the food. Therefore, being late is just an impolite act that people must avoid.

LATEST PART 3 – CAFÉ

  1.  Why do people go to coffee houses?

Answer: Well, as you know, there are more and more people in coffee shops now a days and there are several reasons for this. The first reason I can think of is coffee shops provide convenience on your leisure time. For instance, you don’t have to clean the house before someone comes to visit, just go to a coffee shop and enjoy with no pressure. Another reason for that is you can pass the time in a coffee shop, as long as you drink the coffee you can stay as long as you want. There are no waitresses rushing you off so that they can seat someone else. Also, the couches are comfy and the coffee is usually good. Take me as an example, I usually go to the coffee shop when meeting my friends, I won’t get bored and I can enjoy myself while waiting.

Answer: I have to say that, the difference between a cafe and a restaurant is usually not very distinct. First of all,  a cafe generally offers a light, casual environment, wherein you can stay outside, sip on beverages and eat lunch or snacks. Here’s an example, most coffee shop in China has cozy environment usually situated in a discreet location where people can sit, eat, drink and chat with each other. As opposed to a restaurant, it is a dining establishment that usually offers much more varied service, a formal environment, and is designed around the idea of the ‘meal’, usually dinner. 1. Do Chinese people like to drink coffee?

Answer: Well, I would say yes, but probably not as much as the many Westerners crowing about the ever-increasing number of Starbucks. This is for the fact that, most traditional Chinese folks prefer drinking tea as it is healthier, it cleanses our internal organs and has more health benefits than coffee. As a matter of fact, in most Chinese restaurants, they serve tea as a complimentary drink. On the other hand, there are also Chinese people who love coffee as it seems to be addictive and can make their mood better. An example for that is my father, he cannot start his day without drinking coffee because it gives him energy and positive mood whenever he drinks it.

Answer: We cannot deny that people in China love to partake in a wide range of Chinese sports, games, and leisure activities, which you can observe during a stroll in the park or at traditional festivals or competitions. The first point here is that Chinese people like to spend their free time outdoors as much as possible. For instance, parents will take their children outside. You will find Chinese parks full of people, both young and old, from dawn to dusk, engaging in various Chinese sports and leisure activities. Another point here is that Chinese people are very sociable and would rather spend time with others than alone. To begin with, I like going to go to public places such as a coffee shop/ café/ restaurant/ bar during my leisure time. A friend of mine, David, opened his own cafe which is situated in an open-air rooftop in one of the huge buildings in my hometown. If I can vividly remember, he first opened this shop three months ago, I was amazed of his café because my friend David put a lot of effort into his wonderful rooftop garden. The cool thing about this place is that it’s on the 30th stories and the most interesting part of it is the 360-degree view. In addition to that, the place is filled with plenty of flowers and plants so the cafe looks really colorful and natural. I can say that, it’s a great place to go on a sunny weekend afternoon because you can sunbathe while being surrounded by flowers and plants. Hence, I like to go there on the weekends because it’s really peaceful, I can read a book, drink some tea and just gaze at the city view. In my mind, this garden is really cozy where you can avoid the hustle and bustle of the city life.  To sum up, it’s one of my favorite cafe when I’m in town which I highly recommend to people and my friends when they visit my homeland.

As you know, Beijing is the capital city of China which is the center of attraction for tourists, job and business opportunities. Because of its popularity more and more people want to visit Beijing, this is mainly for the reason that Beijing has its beautiful scenery and cultural inheritance. Last month, we went to visit a place called Bird’s Nest which is a huge stadium in Beijing. During this trip, I was with my friends to attend a local band concert. I have learned that, it’s the largest stadium in China and it can accommodate 10 thousand people in total. In addition to that, the sports’ stadium is shaped like a dome with an open roof and with many entrances going inside. This entertainment facility is situated in the city center and it’s the venue for many major concerts, sports events, and a large gathering. However, when there aren’t any major events, it’s open to the public, you know, people can go there to run on the track or play any sports such as badminton or swimming. Perhaps, the primary reason why I visited this stadium is because I love going to concerts, as a matter of fact, I have been to many local stadiums but the Bird’s Nest is the most astonishing stadium I have visited. For the fact that, the place looks very fancy and famous bands internationally or locally hold there concert on this stadium. To sum up it up, I enjoyed going to Beijing learning about it’s history and attending this wonderful concert experience.

  1.    Do you like large places?

Answer: It’s hard to tell, I don’t have any preference when it comes to this but sometimes it depends on the purpose of liking it. First and foremost, if I talk about my own place at home, of course I would say that I would like to have a huge space because it feels comfortable and cozy to live in a spacious house. As a matter of fact, we just moved in to a bigger house recently and living there seems to feel like heaven. However, there’s an exemption, if it talks about the city I prefer a small city because it is less hassle and way more peaceful compared to large cities. A good example for this is Shanghai, it’s a metropolis where life is fast-paced and cost of living is expensive.

LATEST IELTS PART 3 Speaking Question & suggested responses / answers – POLITENESS (June 2017)

  1. How do Chinese people show politeness?

Answer: We all know that politeness is a part of good characteristics which Chinese people consider very essential. Being respectful and being helpful are just few ways Chinese people portray this act. The first common way to consider is showing respect to people, honestly speaking, people in China hate mistreating others, we usually communicate politely to people no matter what type of people they are. Let me give you an example, Chinese people approach sales man/lady when they shop for things politely, we don’t act rude just because they are a worker. Another point here is that, we portray politeness by helping each other, helping one another is a kind act to win humanity and when we help others we don’t ask anything in return. Let me take the elders as an example, in my home country, we give a hand to senior citizens by helping them cross the street or carry their heavy luggage.

Answer Overview:

We started with an introduction sentence beginning with a linking phrase (We all know that..), followed with the key points – RESPECTFUL & HELPFUL. Next to that is the first main point beginning with a linking phrase (The first common way to consider is…) followed with a reason and an example. Same goes to the second point (Another point here is that…). As you noticed, there are 2 main ideas with reasons and examples on each section to elaborate its point.

  1. Are there any differences between etiquette in cities and in small towns?

Answer: To be honest with you, it’s hard to generalize, but it’s possible that people in big cities are in more of a hurry and perhaps less tolerant of mistakes or ignorance compared to people in small towns. This is for the reason that, people in big cities have fast-paced of life, they normally encounter hustle and bustle of the city life. In addition to that, they are more accustomed to diversity of all kinds. As opposed to people in small cities, they tend to have a more relaxed and peaceful life. I would also want to add that, people there tend to be closer to everyone, but it also varies by country, and by region if the country is big enough.

Answer Overview:

The structure of this answer is in comparison form. We started off with a linking phrase together with the comparison of both sides. As you can see, there were at least 2 reasons provided with linking structures in each points. We’ve also used comparative phrase – AS OPPOSED TO to show comparison of both sides.

  1. How to teach children to be polite?

Answer: As you know, every parents’ dream of a polite little child as their child’s behavior reflects of who they are as a parent. Apparently, the first thing that parents must do is to teach polite words to their children such as saying “Please” and “Thank you” and “Excuse me”. Let say for instance, when you give something to your child they must say “thank you” in return or when they ask something from you they must say “Please”. Another way is that, parents should teach their kids the golden rules of conversations which can be applicable in their professional lives. There are several examples to these rules, such as  to not interrupt another while someone is speaking, also,  to not misquote or lie.

Answer Overview:
We begin with long response before we cut it down into details. We introduced our first main idea with corresponding linking phrases (Apparently, the first thing that parents must do is) followed with its example to support the main idea with another linking phrases (Let say for instance). Next to that is the second main ideas with corresponding linking phrase (Another way is that) followed with its example (There are several examples to these rules).

  1. How do you deal with impolite people?

Answer: Honestly speaking, being impolite is one of the few things that get my blood boiling right away, therefore, I have come up with several ways to deal with these people. The very primary thing I do is to never greet them first, I act like they don’t exist. As a matter of fact, last month I saw an acquaintance in a shopping mall, she acted rude during our school’s party so when I bumped into her I just walked straight to my destination pretending I didn’t see her. In addition to that, I never start a conversation with them because having a conversation with them is only an invitation for more rudeness. Basing from my previous example, I didn’t talk to her at all even though I was aware that she saw me.

Answer Overview:
We begin with long response before we cut it down into details. 1. What kinds of behavior are not polite?

Answer: As you know, there are bunch of impolite acts out there which causes conflict to people. And the first thing I can think of is saying nothing when someone handed you something whether it be a thing or a service, most people today don’t know how to say “Thank you”. A most common example is, when we go to public places such as a café, restaurant or spa, we tend to forget to thank those employees for the good service they have provided us. Another type of bad behavior is disrespecting your parents, most parents has misunderstanding with their kids because of the generation gap. Take me as an example, I often have an argument with my dad because he often scolds me of hanging out with my friends late at night on weekends. I couldn’t make him understand that weekends is when people attend party and most entertainment facilities are open.

One of the major themes in Part 2 is to describe a person/people. Here are the following up-to-date cue cards that corresponds to this theme:

  • Describe a thing that a wise person did/a person who gave a clever solution to a problem
  • Describe a helpful person in work or study
  • Describe a new friend you’ve made recently
  • Describe an interesting neighbor

  • Describe a family member made you proud
  • Describe the politest person you know
  • Describe a person/something that made you laugh
  • Describe a person who you have met before and you want to know more about

Cue Card:

Describe the politest person you know

You should say:

Who this person is

When and where you know about him/her

How you know about him/her

And explain why you think he/she is a polite person
Answer:
To begin with, I would like to inform you that I have met several polite people in my life including my family and friends, but the person I really consider polite is my Uncle M. You know, he is father’s good friend since they were in the University and the head of China Mobile in Changsha branch. Due to their closeness, they usually play chess and drink tea during weekends so I get to see him frequently. As a matter of fact, my dad used to work with him for 11 years and told me that he has over 3000 people working under him so he has a huge reputation and responsibility. I want to point out that, despite of his high position, Uncle M is a wonderful kind leader to his colleagues and has made Changsha branch one of the most profitable branches all over China. I would also like to add that, he is very flexible in making decisions with a wonderful vision. In addition to that, he knows how to get through to people, whether it’s his colleagues or the market. Perhaps, I often hear Uncle M and my father discussing abut business ideas where I acquired a lot of information from it. I have learned that, business and life is all equal, we have to be flexible and know how to make others feel comfortable. No matter how successful Uncle M is, he is till fair in treating his workers and most people admire his humbleness. All in all, I could say that Uncle M is the person I look up to and a person I know who is not only a good leader but also a kind person.

Answer Overview:

Uncle M’s topic is suitable for the PERSON/PEOPLE theme. You can use the details provided above to describe your cue card, however, you must fit-in the right key points according to what’s given to you. For instance, you are given a topic to “Describe a family member who has had important influence on you”, you can replace some information above to suit your subject. You can pretend that Uncle M is your father’s brother instead of your father’s friend. Same goes with the other cue cards.
